Thanking politely is sometimes hard to know how to do. In the culture of the area there seems to be the idea that you only thank people for doing something special. Serving you at a restaurant is not special as it is the person's job, etc. I have the habit of thanking everyone for the smallest thing. It comes across as odd to most people. In fact, some children in Delwara once told me that foreigners leave take by saying "thank you". I say all of this to say, don't overuse "thank you".
